Agriculture App for Sustainability

Description

I collaborated with a leading agriculture  organization to design an app to keep track of sustainability practices.

Due to confidentiality agreements, the company name cannot be disclosed.

Role

End-to-end product design

Designed for

Farmers and agricultural workers

About the project

I partnered with an agricultural technology company to design a digital platform that supports sustainable farming practices. The system was built to help farmers track their crops and provide companies with assurance that their farms are managed sustainably.

The platform enabled users to:

  • Monitor and follow up on their crops, ensuring sustainable practices are maintained.

  • Access company programs and resources for sustainable agriculture.

  • Use insurance options to protect against natural disasters.

  • View real-time satellite images of their fields.

  • Track and choose natural fertilizers and herbicides.

  • Receive support and guidance from the platform when needed.

  • Visualize sustainability performance through easy-to-understand charts.

The goal was to provide farmers with a clear and efficient way to manage their crops, achieve certifications, and build trust with large companies looking for sustainable suppliers.

Design Progress

  • Used Design Thinking methodology to create this design.

Phase 1: Empathized

We conducted focus groups and one-on-one interviews to gain a deeper understanding of user needs, pain points, and expectations.

  • Who are they? Farmers and agricultural workers who manage crops and want to ensure their practices are sustainable and certified. From USA, UK, France and Spain

  • What do they need? A reliable system to track the sustainability of their crops

  • What do they expect? A clear, intuitive way to follow up on their farms, visualize sustainability performance, and maintain trust with large companies seeking certified, sustainable suppliers.

  • What are their pain points? Difficulty proving sustainable practices to companies. Lack of centralized tools for monitoring crops, accessing support, or visualizing sustainability. Limited guidance on best practices and certifications.

These insights allowed us to make informed design decisions and create solutions that truly addressed their challenges, helping farmers manage their crops more efficiently, achieve certifications, and build trust with large buyers.

Phase 2: Define

Map Needs

Based on insights from user interviews, I organized farmers’ needs in a FigJam board, grouping them into categories. I then evaluated which needs were feasible by creating an effort-impact matrix and reviewed it with the PM and relevant stakeholders to ensure that the proposed solutions could be effectively implemented.

Create Proposals for the Flow

Given the complexity of managing sustainable farming practices, I mapped the existing workflows to understand how farmers track their crops, access support programs, and manage sustainability certifications. Based on this analysis and insights from interviews, I proposed several workflow options.

In collaboration with developers, stakeholders, and product manager, we reviewed these proposals and defined the final way to go, ensuring the flow was clear, efficient, and aligned with both farmers’ needs and business goals.

User Stories

As a farmer, I want to:

• track the growth and health of my crops so that I can maintain sustainable practices and improve yields.

• contact support through the app so that I can resolve questions or problems without delays.

• access company programs and resources for sustainable agriculture so that I can implement best practices effectively.

• manage insurance options for natural disasters so that I can protect my crops and investments.

• generate reports proving my sustainable practices so that large companies can trust and hire me.

Objective

To design a user-centered platform that helps farmers manage and track their crops while ensuring sustainable practices.

The system aims to provide clear visibility into crop health, sustainability performance, certifications, and risk management, while enabling access to support programs, insurance options, real-time satellite images, and guidance on natural fertilizers and herbicides. The goal is to simplify complex workflows, improve efficiency, and build trust between farmers and large companies seeking certified sustainable suppliers.

Phase 4: Prototype

Here's the prototype for an specific part of the process, some names and labels were updated to protect confidentiality of the company

Mockups

Mockups.png

The app was designed in 4 languages: British English, United States English, Spanish and French.

UI Kit

This was the company’s first app, so even though a UI Kit already existed, I had to design custom components to meet the specific requirements of the platform. I collaborated closely with the UI Kit team to ensure consistency across all platforms while addressing the unique needs of the app.

Phase 5: Test

I created interactive prototypes, tested them with users through one-on-one sessions, collected feedback, and iterated on the designs accordingly.

Throughout this process, we also identified opportunities for new features, which were added to the roadmap.
